The AKL licence and importing dental equipment into Indonesia

Imported medical devices in Indonesia need a distribution licence — an AKL number — from the Ministry of Health before they are sold, filed on the ministry's regalkes portal. The applicant is an Indonesian distributor holding a medical device distribution licence (IDAK, formerly IPAK) and a good-distribution-practice certificate, appointed by the manufacturer through a letter of appointment; a foreign manufacturer cannot file directly. The licence is valid for up to five years and follows the validity of that appointment letter, so the commercial relationship and the regulatory one run together. Devices are classed A to D on the ASEAN model, and a dental treatment unit is generally Class B; the class is confirmed on filing. The ministry's service standard for a Class B import licence is about three months, and three to six months is a realistic plan.

The manufacturer's part of the file is the letter of appointment and a Certificate of Free Sale — apostilled, since both China and Indonesia are in the Hague Convention — ISO 13485 and CE certificates, the technical file, and labelling and instructions, which must be in Bahasa Indonesia for the intended use, warnings and directions. We issue the documents against the model numbers on your order. Halal certification is being phased in for medical devices from October 2026, starting with Class A and reaching Class B only in 2029; the implementing rules aim it at devices with animal-derived materials, and your distributor confirms whether a chair is in scope when the Class B date falls due.

Customs. Medical devices are on Indonesia's restricted-import list, so customs checks the AKL number on the single window: the licence must exist before the container sails. Chinese-origin chairs enter at preferential duty under the ASEAN–China agreement when a Form E certificate of origin accompanies the shipment, and VAT applies at an effective 11% on the landed value. Public hospitals and health centres buy through the government e-catalogue, which gives preference to domestically made devices, so imported chairs sell mainly to private clinics and chains. Your customs broker confirms the tariff line and origin rules before you fix a resale price.

Power, air and water in an Indonesian clinic

Indonesia's mains supply is 230 V at 50 Hz with Type C and F (European) sockets, so the standard 220 V / 50 Hz version of our chairs and compressors is the right one — the same version that runs across Asia and Europe. Supply on Java is stable; outside Java it is less so — North and West Sumatra saw rolling blackouts in mid-2026 — so clinics there keep a generator. Practical points:

• Size the backup for the compressor. The chair draws little; the compressor decides whether a UPS or small generator copes. Ask us for its running and starting current.
• A stabiliser or UPS on the chair's control unit protects the board from the surge when a generator cuts in.
• Oil-free compressors suit the climate — no oil changes — and a dryer keeps handpiece air dry in year-round humidity.

Water: the dental unit runs on filtered water or a bottle-fed system; the autoclave on distilled water — a 4-litre distiller covers a single-chair practice.

Shipping from Foshan to Jakarta, Surabaya and Medan

Our factory is in Foshan, an hour from the container ports of Guangzhou (Nansha) and Shenzhen. Direct services reach Tanjung Priok in Jakarta in about 5–10 days port to port, with several sailings a week; Tanjung Perak in Surabaya, the gateway to eastern Indonesia, and Belawan in Medan for Sumatra take a little longer. A single chair or a small first order goes as LCL (shared container); a first order for resale is usually a 20 ft container. The packing data we send with every quotation lists how many chairs and equipment combinations fit in a 20 ft and a 40 ft container. Small items — handpieces, curing lights, cameras — can travel by air to Jakarta in a few days.

We quote FOB Guangzhou or Shenzhen for dealers with their own forwarder, or delivered to the Indonesian port when you prefer one price that includes the sea freight. Payment is by T/T or L/C; lead time is confirmed on the proforma invoice and sample units ship first.

Buying as a clinic or as a dealer

Clinics. Yes, we sell single units directly — one chair for a new practice, a second chair for a growing clinic, or a replacement for an old unit. In Indonesia the device must be licensed and imported by a licensed distributor, so we either introduce you to our distributor, who holds the licences and installs, or work with the licensed distributor you nominate and support your technician by video during the first installation.

Dealers. Indonesian distributors work with us under the distributor programme: factory-direct pricing tiered by quantity, the AKL document pack with the letter of appointment, marketing files, remote technical training and a spare-parts kit with the first container. Territory exclusivity is discussed once a partner meets an annual commitment — and because the AKL licence follows the appointment letter, an Indonesian partnership is set up with that in mind. Most partnerships begin with a trial of one to a few units, then a first container once the chairs are licensed and installed.
