Registering and importing dental equipment in Mexico

Dental chairs and dental units are medical devices in Mexico and need a registro sanitario from COFEPRIS before they are sold. The registration belongs to a Mexican legal entity — the registration holder, normally the importer or distributor — because a foreign manufacturer cannot apply directly. Registrations are valid for five years and renewable.

There are three ways in. The standard route is a full technical review, typically around a year. The equivalence route applies to devices already approved by the US FDA, Health Canada or Japan's regulator and usually takes five to eleven months. Since September 2025 an abbreviated route recognises approvals from IMDRF member regulators — including China's NMPA, the EU (CE marking), Brazil and Korea — with a target decision of thirty working days; COFEPRIS published a requirements guide for it in June 2026 and opened a public register viewer in August 2026, so a holder can check whether a chair is already registered before filing. Which route fits depends on the approvals a specific model holds, so ask us for the certificate list for the models you want and let your holder choose.

Customs. Chairs are usually classified as dentists' chairs and dental units under Chapter 90 or 94; since January 2026 Mexico applies additional tariffs to a long list of tariff lines from countries without a free trade agreement, including China, so have your agente aduanal confirm the classification and rate before you fix a resale price. Power, air and water in a Mexican clinic

Mexico's mains supply is 127 V at 60 Hz with Type A and B (North American) sockets. Two things follow. First, order the 110 V / 60 Hz version of the chair and the compressor, not the 220 V / 50 Hz version that ships to Europe and Africa — we configure the transformer and the compressor motor for 60 Hz at the factory. Second, tell us the supply you actually measure at the clinic; the electrical specification and plug type are confirmed on your proforma invoice so there is no surprise on installation day.

Power quality varies by state. Blackouts were reported across some twenty states in 2025 as demand outran generation, especially in the Yucatán peninsula, Baja California Sur and the industrial north. Practical points:

• Put the chair's control unit on a voltage regulator or UPS. Brown-outs and the surge when power returns are the usual cause of control-board damage, and a regulator costs a fraction of a board.
• Size any backup for the compressor. The chair draws little; the compressor is the load that decides whether a UPS or small generator copes. Ask us for its running and starting current.
• Oil-free compressors need no oil changes, and a dryer keeps handpiece air dry in humid coastal cities such as Cancún and Veracruz.

Water: the dental unit runs on filtered water or a bottle-fed system; the autoclave on distilled water — a 4-litre distiller covers a single-chair practice.

Shipping from Foshan to Manzanillo, Veracruz or Tijuana

Our factory is in Foshan, an hour from the container ports of Guangzhou (Nansha) and Shenzhen. For Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and the Bajío, containers normally enter through Manzanillo — direct services from Shekou run around three weeks, and most forwarders quote 22–35 days allowing for berth waits, then about a day by truck to Mexico City. Lázaro Cárdenas is the alternative Pacific port with on-dock rail to Mexico City and Monterrey. For the east and the Yucatán peninsula, Veracruz takes about 25–35 days. Clinics in Tijuana and Baja California normally receive through the Pacific ports as well; tell us which port your broker works from and we book accordingly.

A single chair or a small first order goes as LCL (shared container); a first order for resale is usually a 20 ft container. The packing data we send with every quotation lists how many chairs and equipment combinations fit in a 20 ft and a 40 ft container. Small items — handpieces, curing lights, cameras — can travel by air to Mexico City in about a week.

We quote FOB Guangzhou or Shenzhen for dealers with their own forwarder, or delivered to the Mexican port when you prefer one price that includes the sea freight. Payment is by T/T or L/C; lead time is confirmed on the proforma invoice and sample units ship first.

Buying as a clinic or as a dealer

Clinics. Yes, we sell single units directly — one chair for a new practice, a second chair for a tourism clinic, or a replacement for an old unit. In Mexico we will usually introduce you to our distributor, who holds the registrations and installs; where you prefer to import yourself, we support your technician by video during the first installation and supply the COFEPRIS documents to your registration holder. Dealers and depósitos dentales. Mexican dealers work with us under the distributor programme: factory-direct pricing tiered by quantity, the registration document pack with Spanish labelling, marketing files, remote technical training and a spare-parts kit with the first container. Territory exclusivity is discussed once a partner meets an annual commitment. Most partnerships begin with a trial of one to a few units, then a first container once the chairs are registered and installed.
