SAHPRA licensing and importing dental equipment into South Africa

South Africa regulates medical devices through SAHPRA, but in a different shape from most markets. Since 2017 every manufacturer, importer, distributor and wholesaler of medical devices must hold a Medical Device Establishment Licence (MDEL), and each licence holder appoints an Authorised Representative — a natural person resident in South Africa — responsible for the quality, safety and compliance of the devices it handles. Device-by-device registration, on the other hand, is still being phased in: SAHPRA has not yet called up any class for registration, so a dental chair or unit is listed on the licensed importer's product list rather than individually registered. Devices are classed A to D by risk; a patient chair sits at the low end and a powered treatment unit with handpieces one class higher, which the licence holder confirms.

What the licence holder needs from the factory is the evidence that goes on that product list: ISO 13485 and CE certificates for the dental units, a Certificate of Free Sale, access to the technical file on request, and English labelling and instructions that carry the South African licence holder's contact details. SAHPRA now requires ISO 13485 of licence holders themselves at renewal and has published a reliance guideline (2026) recognising approvals such as CE marking, so a well-documented device moves through a licensee's process quickly. Draft new regulations and a voluntary registration study were under way in 2026; your licence holder will know when a registration call-up lands.

Customs. The importer registers with SARS Customs for an importer code; new medical equipment needs no ITAC import permit (used equipment does). Duty is assessed on the customs value under the SARS tariff and VAT applies at import; your clearing agent confirms the tariff line and rate before you fix a resale price. We prepare the invoice, packing list and certificate of origin to match your declaration.

Power, air and water in a South African practice

South Africa's mains supply is 230 V at 50 Hz, so the standard 220 V / 50 Hz version of our chairs and compressors is the right one — the same version that runs across Africa and Europe. Sockets are the large three-pin Type M, increasingly the slimmer Type N under the newer SANS 164-2 standard, and Type C for small appliances; tell us which your practice is wired for and the plug type is confirmed on your proforma invoice.

Load-shedding, the defining constraint of the past decade, has eased: Eskom recorded only 26 hours of it in 2025 and projected a load-shedding-free summer for 2026. Most practices keep the inverter-and-battery systems they installed in the difficult years, and those remain good practice:

• Size the backup for the compressor. The chair's motors draw little; the air compressor is the load that decides whether an inverter copes. Ask us for the running and starting current of the compressor you choose.
• Keep a stabiliser or UPS on the chair's control unit. The surge when a supply switches over is a common cause of control-board damage, and a stabiliser costs a fraction of a board.
• Oil-free compressors need no oil changes, and a dryer keeps handpiece air dry in Durban's humidity.

Water: the dental unit runs on filtered water or a bottle-fed system — useful where municipal supply is interrupted; the autoclave on distilled water, and a 4-litre distiller covers a single-chair practice.

Shipping from Foshan to Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg

Our factory is in Foshan, an hour from the container ports of Guangzhou (Nansha) and Shenzhen. Sailings to Durban and Cape Town take about 20–30 days port to port. Durban handles the majority of South Africa's container traffic and feeds Johannesburg's City Deep inland terminal by rail and road, but it has had long waiting times in 2026 while its terminal changed operator and systems; some carriers have routed via Cape Town or Gqeberha / Ngqura instead. A single chair or a small first order goes as LCL (shared container); a first order for resale is usually a 20 ft container. The packing data we send with every quotation lists how many chairs and equipment combinations fit in a 20 ft and a 40 ft container. Small items — handpieces, curing lights, cameras — can travel by air to Johannesburg in about a week.

We quote FOB Guangzhou or Shenzhen for dealers with their own forwarder, or delivered to the South African port when you prefer one price that includes the sea freight. Payment is by T/T or L/C; lead time is confirmed on the proforma invoice and sample units ship first.

Buying as a practice or as a dealer

Practices. Yes, we sell single units directly — one chair for a new surgery, a second chair for a growing practice, or a replacement for an old unit. In South Africa the device must be imported by a SAHPRA-licensed importer, so we either introduce you to our distributor, who holds the licence and installs, or work with the licensed importer you nominate and support your technician by video during the first installation.

Dealers. South African dealers work with us under the distributor programme: factory-direct pricing tiered by quantity, the document pack for your MDEL product list, marketing files, remote technical training and a spare-parts kit with the first container. Territory exclusivity is discussed once a partner meets an annual commitment. Most partnerships begin with a trial of one to a few units, then a first container once the chairs are listed and installed.
