Thai FDA notification and importing dental equipment into Thailand

Dental chairs are medical devices in Thailand — the Thai FDA's own guidance says so explicitly for the chair the patient sits in — and are controlled by its Medical Device Control Division under the Medical Device Act. Devices are classed 1 to 4 on the ASEAN model, and the class decides the route: Class 1 devices are listed, Class 2 and 3 notified, Class 4 licensed. A dental treatment unit with handpiece drives is generally Class 2, so a chair goes through the notification route; the Thai FDA offers a classification service to confirm the class of a specific configuration. A notification is valid for five years, renewals are filed each autumn on the SKYNET portal, and a Class 2 review can take several months, so dealers start it before the first container is booked.

Only a Thai company holding a Thai FDA establishment licence for import can file — the importer or distributor — and it owns the notification. The manufacturer's part of the file is a technical dossier in the ASEAN CSDT format, an ISO 13485 certificate, a letter of authorisation, the declaration of conformity, a Certificate of Free Sale and the labelling and instructions for the Thai label. Until Thailand's accession to the Apostille Convention takes effect in February 2027, the Free Sale certificate and letter of authorisation are legalised through a Thai embassy; after that an apostille will do. Customs. Each shipment needs a licence per invoice from the Thai FDA through the National Single Window, and the FDA checkpoint inspects medical devices at the port; only notified devices can be imported. Chinese-origin chairs enter at preferential duty under the ASEAN–China agreement when a Form E certificate of origin accompanies the shipment, and VAT is 7% on the landed value. Your customs broker confirms the tariff line and origin rules before you fix a resale price.

Power, air and water in a Thai clinic

Thailand's mains supply is 220–230 V at 50 Hz — the same as China — with Type C and the Thai Type O sockets as the official standard since 2020, while the older hybrid sockets still take North American Type A and B plugs. The standard 220 V / 50 Hz version of our chairs and compressors is the right one; tell us your socket type and it is confirmed on the proforma invoice. Supply is reliable in Bangkok and the main cities. Practical points:

• A stabiliser or UPS on the chair's control unit is cheap insurance against surges in older buildings.
• Size any backup for the compressor. The chair draws little; the compressor decides whether a UPS or small generator copes. Ask us for its running and starting current.
• Oil-free compressors suit the climate — no oil changes — and a dryer keeps handpiece air dry in year-round humidity.

Water: the dental unit runs on filtered water or a bottle-fed system; the autoclave on distilled water — a 4-litre distiller covers a single-chair practice.

Delivery from Foshan to Laem Chabang and Bangkok

Our factory is in Foshan, an hour from the container ports of Guangzhou (Nansha) and Shenzhen. Laem Chabang, which handles most of Thailand's container traffic, is about 5–10 days port to port from Shenzhen, with sailings almost daily; it is 130 kilometres from Bangkok. Bangkok Port on the river takes smaller vessels and suits shared-container cargo. By road, a truck from Guangdong reaches Bangkok through Vietnam and Laos in about three days of driving and four to seven days with border clearance, and the China–Laos railway offers a weekly rail option of eight to twelve days; for a single chair the truck is often the quickest door-to-door choice.

A single chair or a small first order goes as LCL (shared container) or by truck; a first order for resale is usually a 20 ft container. The packing data we send with every quotation lists how many chairs and equipment combinations fit in a 20 ft and a 40 ft container. Small items — handpieces, curing lights, cameras — arrive within days.

We quote FOB Guangzhou or Shenzhen for dealers with their own forwarder, or delivered to Laem Chabang or Bangkok when you prefer one price that includes the freight. Payment is by T/T or L/C; lead time is confirmed on the proforma invoice and sample units ship first.

Buying as a clinic or as a dealer

Clinics. Yes, we sell single units directly — one chair for a new practice, a second chair for a growing clinic, or a replacement for an old unit. In Thailand the device must be notified and imported by a licensed Thai importer, so we either introduce you to our distributor, who holds the licence and installs, or work with the licensed importer you nominate and support your technician by video during the first installation.

Dealers. Thai dealers work with us under the distributor programme: factory-direct pricing tiered by quantity, the Thai FDA document pack, marketing files, remote technical training and a spare-parts kit with the first container. Territory exclusivity is discussed once a partner meets an annual commitment. Most partnerships begin with a trial of one to a few units, then a first container once the chairs are notified and installed — and with a sea leg of about a week, restocking is quick.
